Abstract
During the eighties, in parallel with the first efforts of macroeconomic stabilisation and external liberalisation, the Argentinean industrial sector made deep changes in its structure and increased its concentration. During the nineties, with the implementation of the “Conversion Plan”, deregulation efforts and openness increased, the privatisation of public assets expanded, and the macroeconomic stabilisation program intensified. Metalworking industries recovered their historical dynamic role in the economy, this time in conjunction with the deep restructuring of manufacturing plants and a strategy of participation in the international market by leading firms.
Will this “new” metalworking industry be sustainable in the future? What is the future of the natural resources processing industries that grew up under high subsidies in the eighties, but have to work in today's deregulated environment and open economy? To what extent the has the current industrial organisation model recovered the investment in installed capacity? These questions are examined throughout this book, which studies the global phenomenon of industrial structure change and other sectoral experiences.
